TITLE : How do I Verify a Bad Disk?

This document is designed to provide information neccessary to determine if
an installation disk is bad. Here are a couple of ways that we suggest.
1. RUN SCANDISK.
To run SCANDISK in Windows 95, please follow the following steps.
1. Go to Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Scandisk.
2. Select the drive where the suspected bad disk is located.
3. Select the Thorough test.
4. Select Options.
5. Select 'Do not perform write testing'.
6. Select OK.
7. Select Start.
To run SCANDISK in previous versions of Windows or DOS.
1. Go to a DOS prompt.
2. Type CD\ <Enter>.
3. Type CD DOS <Enter>.
4. Type SCANDISK A: <Enter>. Where A is the drive specification.
5. When asked to perform a Surface Scan, select Yes.
Be sure to report any error when performing the SCANDISK.
2. Copy disk to hard drive (Use only if SCANDISK is not available).
1. Go to a DOS prompt.
2. Type CD\ <Enter>.
3. Type MD Disk <Enter>.
4. Go to drive where bad disk is located. For example: Type A: <Enter>.
5. Type Copy *.* C:\Disk <Enter>. Where C is the drive specification.
If the copy fails, you may have a bad disk.
Be sure to report any errors on copying of files.
To remove files and directories copied to hard drive.
1. Go to the hard drive. For example: Type C:
2. Type CD Disk <Enter>.
3. Type Del *.* <Enter>.
4. Type CD\ <Enter>.
5. Type RD Disk <Enter>.
3. Attempt to use the disk on another computer, if it works there then the
disk should be fine. You may have some dust on the read heads of your
floppy drive. There are a number of Disk Drive Cleaning Systems available
on the market that may help.
If it is determined that you have a bad installation disk, please contact
Customer Service at 573-443-3282 to aquire a new one.
If your replacement disk appears to be bad, please call Technical Support at
573-875-0530.
