TITLE : How to Telnet to the CompuServe Gateway
PRODUCT : Procomm Plus 4.x, 3.x
==============================================================================
Procomm Plus is a fully integrated Internet package. It provides Telnet
functionality using either serial or network connections. You can telnet to
CompuServe using Procomm Plus Telnet support via TCP/IP protocol and a Windows
Socket interface.
This document gives a basic description of the TCP/IP stack, the Winsock
interface, and the basics of making an Internet Connection. It includes
step-by-step instruction on installing a Telnet connection, and adding
the CompuServe entry to your Telnet Connection Directory. In addition,
it describes two methods for launching a Telnet session to the
CompuServe gateway.
TCP/IP BASICS
All machines on the Internet are interconnected using Transmission
Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol or TCP/IP. TCP/IP is a common set
of rules allowing different computers on the Internet, including yours,
to communicate and transport information across the Internet. Desktop
computers communicate via TCP/IP with an interface called a TCP/IP
stack.
WINSOCK BASICS
Windows socket, Winsock for short, provides the interface between your
Internet applications and your TCP/IP stack. A TCP/IP package usually
includes a Winsock file called WINSOCK.DLL for 16-bit applications and
WSOCK32.DLL for 32-bit applications. Procomm Plus' Internet applications
communicate with the TCP/IP stack through this file.
INTERNET CONNECTION
There are several different ways of connecting to the Internet. Two of
the most common methods are using a network connection or a Dial-Up
connection to an Internet provider
NETWORK CONNECTION
If your computer is on a network that is directly connected to the
Internet with network TCP/IP stack, you can use that connection with
Procomm Plus. Check with your network administrator for instructions
on loading your network TCP/IP stack properly.
DIAL-UP CONNECTION, SLIP OR PPP
If you are using your modem for Internet connection, you need a SLIP
(Serial Line Internet Protocol) or PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) stack,
and an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your ISP may give you a package
that includes a SLIP or PPP type of TCP/IP stack, an IP address, and a
dial-up program. The dial-up program, using your modem, connects you to
the service provider's system and enables you to gain access to a SLIP
or PPP server.
This server, using the SLIP or PPP stack, establishes your Internet Link
and connects you directly to the Internet. When you subscribe to an
Internet Service Provider, all information needed for the TCP/IP
settings located in the setup should be provided by your Internet
Service Provider (ISP).
Procomm Plus 4.0 for Windows 95 utilizes the Windows 95 or Windows NT Dialup
Networking to load a TCP/IP stack. It also comes with an option to establish
an internet account with Compuserve
PROCOMM PLUS 3.0 comes with a SLIP/PPP type of TCP/IP Stack, a WINSOCK.DLL and
an option to establish an internet account with CompuServe. The TCP/IP stack
that comes with Procomm plus is fully Windows Socket Compliant. It is
designed to connect to the Internet through a modem, and can communicate with
both SLIP and PPP servers.
TELNET BASICS
A Telnet connection provides point-to-point terminal communication over
the TCP/IP network. Telnet allows you to logon to remote systems such as
CompuServe over the Internet. Telnet connections are made with a TCP/IP
stack using a network or a dial-up (SLIP/PPP) connection.
Procomm Plus' Internet applications communicate with the TCP/IP stack
through WSOCK32.DLL (WINSOCK.DLL for PROCOMM PLUS 3.0). You must have the
TCP/IP stack and WSOCK32.DLL installed in order make use of internet
utilities.
Once you establish your Internet connection, you can use Procomm Plus
Telnet support to Telnet to the CompuServe gateway.
ADDING COMPUSERVE TO YOUR TELNET CONNECTION DIRECTORY
1. From the main window of Procomm Plus, click Mode.
2. Select Telnet.
3. Click the Connection Directory icon (open book icon).
4. Click the Telnet tab to open the Telnet class Connection Directory.
5. Click the New Entry icon to open the Add Directory Entry window.
6. Type CompuServe in the Name field.
7. Select Normal Telnet from Telnet Options.
8. Type in compuserve.com or use 149.174.207.12 for the Host/IP address.
9. Select VT100 for Terminal emulation.
10. Click OK.
HOW TO TELNET TO COMPUSERVE FROM THE TELNET CONNECTION DIRECTORY
1. Open the Telnet Connection Directory by clicking on the Connection
Directory icon (open book) or pressing ALT-D.
2. Click the Telnet tab to access your Telnet entries.
3. Select the CompuServe connection.
4. Click the Connect button to launch your CompuServe Telnet session.
HOW TO TELNET TO COMPUSERVE USING RAPID CONNECT TELNET:
1. Click the Rapid Connect Telnet box's down arrow.
2. Select [Telnet Connections].
3. Click the CompuServe entry to launch your Telnet session to
CompuServe gateway.
NOTE: The [Telnet Connection] is preselected if you click on Mode icon and
select Telnet. The Terminal screen is set to Telnet mode and the Rapid
Connect list box will list your Telnet connections.
