==============================================================================
TITLE : Setup and Use of Telnet
PRODUCT : Procomm Plus 4.x, 3.x
==============================================================================
Procomm Plus' Telnet allows you to connect using a TCP/IP network
connection or a SLIP/PPP dial-up connection. Telnet is a special kind of
data connection which utilizes a slightly modified Terminal window. This
document explains the basic steps involved with setup and use of Telnet in
Procomm Plus.
TELNET BASICS
With Telnet you can connect to remote locations via TCP/IP over a network,
SLIP or PPP dial-up connection. Telnet features include the ability to
emulate several terminal types over the connection, data entry/retrieval,
and file transfers.
The following procedure describes how to create a Connection Directory
entry for a Telnet session and then use the entry to launch your Telnet
session.
ADDING A TELNET CONNECTION ENTRY
Creating a Connection Directory entry
1. On the Procomm Plus Terminal Window, click File from the Menu Bar
then Connection Directory.
2. On the Connection Directory Window, click the New Entry icon or
select Edit then New Entry from the Menu Bar. The Add Directory
Window should appear.
3. Click the Telnet Tab to access the Telnet options available.
4. Click the mouse pointer in the Name edit field. Now you are ready
to enter the name you wish this connection to be called. This is
the name that will be displayed in the Entries area of the
Connection Directory and Rapid Connection area of the Terminal
Window.
5. Click inside the Host/IP Address edit field. Enter the Host Domain
Name or IP address for this connection. Example: bbs.datastorm.com
6. Terminal emulation should default to VT-100. You can change this
setting to other Terminal emulation's such as ANSI BBS, but should
be changed only when you are sure the site operates using an
emulation other than VT-100.
7. Once you have specified the entry's Name, Host, and Terminal fields
you have given Procomm Plus the minimum information it needs to
connect to your site or system. At this time you can Click OK, and
save the connection or continue to select additional Telnet options.
The steps detailed below refer to optional settings for your Telnet
connection.
Optional Telnet Connection Settings
1. From the Add Directory Entry window, click on the Company field and
specify the company name. The Company name is not required to
connect.
2. The Telnet Options edit field refers to the default or normal
settings placed in the Setup Utility when Procomm Plus was
installed. Please refer to your User Guide or Online Help for
instruction on modifying Normal Telnet Options if necessary.
3. The Protocol edit field should default to ZMODEM. This box
specifies the File Transfer Protocol that you wish to use over the
Telnet connection. Generally ZMODEM or KERMIT are the File transfers
of choice over Telnet connections. It's very important to
understand that what File Transfer Protocols the Telnet site is
capable of using dictates what Protocol you should use here.
4. Click on the Group edit field and select an available Connection
Group for this connection to be saved in or select [None]. The
Create button allows you to create a new Group in which to save this
connection.
5. Be sure to click OK to save this connection entry. If you do NOT
click OK, your information will be lost.
After you have created a Telnet-class entry, you can edit a variety of
other class-specific options in the main Connection Directory window.
This document does not include these additional procedures. Please
refer to your Manual or Online Help under the heading Telnet-class
Settings.
LAUNCHING YOUR TELNET SESSION
There are several ways to launch your Telnet connection. The two most
popular ways are:
Using the Rapid Connect-Data Feature
1. From the Procomm Plus Data Terminal or Telnet Terminal windows,
click on the drop-down arrow of the Rapid Connect box located on the
upper left hand side of the Action Bar.
2. Click on the Connection Name that you wish to connect to. Or if you
don't see your entry, click on the [Telnet Connections] group and
then click on the entry name you wish to connect to. Your Telnet
session should now launch.
From the Connection Directory
1. From the Connection Directory, Select the Telnet Tab.
2. Click once to highlight the entry name you wish to connect to.
3. Click on Connect and the Connection Directory will disappear and
your Telnet session should launch.
