==============================================================================
TITLE : Common File Transfer Problems
PRODUCT : PROCOMM PLUS for Windows All Versions
==============================================================================
Are you having trouble transferring files between your PC and other
computers? This document may help. It discusses program settings which
affect file transfers and details some common file transfer problems and
solutions.
DOWNLOAD ONLINE.DOC FROM THE QUARTERDECK BBS
Following the tutorial instructions on pages 1-17 to 1-20 of your User
Manual, attempt to download ONLINE.DOC from our BBS. The rest of this
bulletin offers advice if you run into problems.
AUTOMATIC DOWNLOAD SETTINGS
With the above ZMODEM transfer, if absolutely nothing happens, or just a
burst of garbage characters appears on screen, you may not have configured
your program correctly for automatic downloads. Try the following steps.
1 From the Terminal window press <Alt><S>, <S> to access Current Setup.
2 From the Current Setup dialog box, select Options, General Options.
3 In the center, right-hand side of this dialog box is the Automatic
download start checkbox. If it is not checked, enable it and click OK to
save the changes.
4 At this point, you should be at the Terminal window communicating with
the BBS once more. Continue to follow the instructions in your manual's
tutorial section to download ONLINE.DOC.
ABORT TRANSFER SETTINGS
If your file transfer progress window appears after you initiate the
transfer but then quits immediately, or quits and displays the error
message "NO CARRIER", then you may solve this by setting PROCOMM PLUS to
ignore the carrier detect line.
1 From the Terminal window, press <Alt><S>, <S> to access Current Setup.
2 From the Current Setup dialog box, select Options, General Options.
3 In the center, right-hand side of this dialog box is the Abort transfer if
CD lost checkbox. If it is checked, disable it by clicking within the
checkbox to remove the X, and click OK to save the changes.
4 At this point, you should be at the Terminal window communicating with the
BBS once more. Continue to follow the instructions in your manual's
tutorial section to download ONLINE.DOC.
HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS
If the software setting listed above solves your transfer problem, and you
are using an external modem, then there is an excellent chance you have
either a faulty serial cable or port which is not accurately passing voltage
on the CD wire. You may want to test this by replacing the serial cable
with a new one, or try attaching your modem to a different serial port on
your PC. Likewise, 9 to 25 pin serial cable adapters are prime suspects for
losing voltage in this situation.
DOWNLOAD DIRECTORY SETTINGS
Another cause for a download immediately stopping might be an invalid
directory setting for downloaded files. You should check your download
directory settings to confirm where PROCOMM PLUS attempts to store
downloaded files. PROCOMM PLUS for Windows attempts to confirm
the presence of an existing subdirectory name when a user edits his Download
Directory settings, but any changes to your drive's directory structure
after installing the program could result in download failures.
From the Terminal window press <Alt><S>, <S> to access Current Setup.
From the Current Setup dialog box, select Options, Paths.
In the middle, right-hand side of the dialog box is the Download path field.
If you chose the default installation paths, this will be C:\PROWIN2\DNLOAD.
Whatever the path may be, please confirm that the drive and path referenced
do in fact exist. Likewise, if you believe any attempted transfers did
succeed but you have not been able to find the downloaded files, check the
drive and path as shown in the Download path field for the downloaded files.
As a test, you may wish to change the Download path field to C:\ and attempt
to download to the root directory. Click OK to make the change permanent.
At this point, you should be at the Terminal window communicating with the
BBS once more. Follow the instructions outlined within the "Procedures"
section to download the "ONLINE.DOC" file.
