1.0 Overview

      This update package contains firmware updates for IBM eServer xSeries,
      Intellistation and options that use integrated Broadcom ethernet adapters.
      For a complete list of IBM products supported by this package, please
      refer to the change history file.

1.1 Limitations

      
1.2 Level recommendation and prerequisites for the update

      a. The NetXtreme firmware update for vmware requires a tg3 driver at level 3.58b 
         or higher installed in the system.
      b. The NetXtreme II firmware update for vmware requires a bnx2 driver at level 1.6.6b 
         or higher installed in the system.
      c. Ethernet ports need to be up for the firmware update to happen and 
         "each port" should be configured with an ip address.
      d. libstdc++.so.5 and/or libstdc++.so.6 needs to be installed in the 
         system(compat-libstdc++-33-<version>.<architecture>.rpm provides that library).
      e. For Rhel3, the kernel version should be 2.4.24 or higher, for the update 
         to function properly.
      f. VMware supported versions are ESX 3.5u5 (or later) and ESX 4.0 (or later).

      Note:If any of the prerequisites are not met, the Broadcom firmware update 
      process will indicate a  failure. To ensure that all of your Broadcom Ethernet 
      adapters are updated to the latest firmware, please satisfy all prerequisites 
      before running the Broadcom firmware update.

2.0 Installation and setup instructions for vmware 

      vmware update is packaged as a binary,which allows the user to 
      upgrade the firmware silently  

2.1 Installation of ESX      
       
      Use the command 
      ./brcm_fw_nic_<version>_vmware_32-64.bin -s
	  
      In ESX 4.x environment, you need to remove libgcc_s.so.1 file , before applying the firmware update.  
	  
      i-) mv /usr/lib/vmware/lib64/libgcc_s.so.1 /usr/lib/vmware/lib64/libgcc_s.so.1.old 
      ii-)./brcm_fw_nic_<version>_vmware_32-64.bin -s
      iii-)mv /usr/lib/vmware/lib64/libgcc_s.so.1.old /usr/lib/vmware/lib64/libgcc_s.so.1
	  

      The firmware update tool will only update the firmware if the existing level is less than
      the level in the package. To override the version check, run the firmware update as follows:
      
         ./brcm_fw_nic_<version>_vmware_32-64.bin -force

2.2 Installation of ESXi and vSphere
	  ESXi and vSphere have remote consoles, therefore commands are run from a client station to the 
	  remote VM server. 

      A command example would be: 
      uxspi900 up --vmware-esxi=https://<UserID>:<Password>@<IPaddress>:<port> --latest 

      e.g., 
      uxspi900 up --vmware-esxi=https://root:passw0rd@10.0.0.1 --latest 

      Additionally, ensure that UXSPI is running on the client, the xml is in the same directory 
      where uxspi runs and the vmware-esxi is the ip address of the vmware server.
