README.TXT - 7 Jan 1998 - Kensington MouseWorks Software For DOS Software version 5.04 This document describes the latest version of the Kensington MouseWorks software for DOS. (For notes on Windows 3.1, 95 and NT, please see the files README31.TXT, README95.TXT and READMENT.TXT.) Table of Contents: ---------------- 1. Installation Instructions 2. Addendum To The Kensington Mouse User Manual 3. Known Driver Problems 4. How to Contact Kensington INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS --------------------------- To install the Kensington MouseWorks software onto your DOS system: 1. Insert the Kensington MouseWorks floppy disk into the disk drive. 2. Type "A:\DOSSETUP.EXE". This assumes that your Kensington MouseWorks software installation diskette is in the A: drive. 3. Follow the prompts and directions on screen. Simply hitting return at each screen will select the defaults. This is appropriate for the vast majority of users. For complete details on the Setup process, including What Goes Where, please see the file called SETUP.TXT. ADDENDUM TO THE KENSINGTON MOUSE USER MANUAL: -------------------------------------------------- Some applications ask what kind of mouse you are using. If available, select Expert Mouse, Thinking Mouse or Kensington Mouse. If not, select IBM or Microsoft Mouse. Kensington input devices are compatible with these devices. DOSSETUP: If you have trouble using the Dossetup program, try disabling any virus programs and retry the installation. PORTABLE COMPUTERS: Some portable computers have built in input devices, or emulate a mouse with the keyboard. The hardware will work fine on these machines, but on some machines you may have to tell the software what port contains the hardware so it will ignore the built in devices. For example, if the hardware is plugged into the serial port COM1, and it is not being automatically recognized, you may need to add the -1 to the mouse command line. On some machines you may need to use the software provided with the machine to turn off the built in device. COMPAQ IPD: The internal pointing device on some Compaq portables (LTE Lite) may be used if you add "/nCF8,F" on the command line. HIGH MEMORY: Using DOS 5.x, DOS 6.x, Quaterdeck QEMM, or Qualitas 386Max, both MOUSE.COM and CONTROL.EXE may be loaded into high memory. DOSJ: The -J parameter on the MOUSE.COM command line will disable automatic DOSJ support of 2 byte characters in video mode 3. WORD PERFECT FOR DOS: You have a choice of mouse drivers. You may select "Kensington Expert Mouse" in the list. This will use WordPerfect's mouse handling directly and will bypass the Kensington mouse driver. This choice allows the use of extra video modes supported by WordPerfect and saves RAM. However, you do not get the value added features of the Kensington mouse driver. QUARTERDECK DESQVIEW: We recommend you use the MOUSE -OA1 Ctrl+Shift+button option to avoid alt key conflicts. We also recommend "Virtualize text/graphics" be turned off to avoid Control Panel conflicts. TEST.EXE: This program may not work correctly in a DOS window in Microsoft Windows. MOUSE COMMAND LINE: MOUSE -OM# where # is D, H or N for scaling of Double, Half or Normal. MOUSE COMMAND LINE: MOUSE -gs Skip the search for Kensington input devices. MOUSE COMMAND LINE: MOUSE -ge Do the search for Kensington input device (default). DOS 4.0 DOSSHELL: To use the Kensington MouseWorks driver instead of the the DOS built in driver, remove the /MOS:PCIBMDRV.MOS item from the SHELLC command in the DOSSHELL.BAT. This is not necessary with newer versions of DOSHELL from DOS 5.0 and later. KNOWN DRIVER PROBLEMS ------------------------ MOUSE.COM and MODE - There is a problem with the MODE command that can cause your mouse to freeze. If MOUSE.COM is loaded before a MODE statement is used, the mouse will stop working. There are two work-arounds for this problem. Work-around #1: Use MOUSE -J. This parameter turns off the support for DOSJ (Japanese DOS) and will prevent the problem code from being used. Word-around #2: Load MOUSE.COM after you use the MODE command.
