(For notes on Windows 95 and Windows NT, please see the files README95.TXT and READMENT.TXT.) TABLE OF CONTENTS: ---------------- 1. Installation Instructions 2. Changes since the last release 3. Known Driver Problems 4. Known Control Panel Problems 5. Upgrading From Versions Prior To 5.0 6. Addendum To The Kensington MouseWorks User Manual 7. Tips 8. How to Contact Kensington INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS --------------------------- To install the Kensington MouseWorks software onto your Windows 3.1x system: 1. Select "Run" from the File menu in the Program Manager. 2. Type "A:\SETUP.EXE" into the editable text field. This assumes that your Kensington MouseWorks software installation diskette is in the A: drive. 3. Follow the prompts and directions on screen. Simply hitting return at each screen will select the defaults. This is appropriate for the vast majority of users. For complete details on the Setup process, including What Goes Where, please see the file called SETUP.TXT. Changes in 4.11 ------------------ 1. When the top left button is setup up as the middle button and the system is restarted the top left button is still set as the middle button. Previously the top left button was getting set back to its default setting (left button). 2. On high resolution screens the show buttons position was not being restored on a restart if the position was outside the 640x480 screen size. 3. When running Xtree Gold (DOS) and then running Windows from within Xtree Gold (DOS) upon exiting Windows the mouse would freeze. This only happened when using a serial Thinking Mouse. 4. Using the Borland Debugger under Windows with modifier keys (shift, alt, ctrl) did not work. This problem also caused a number of remote control programs to fail. 5. The user is now able to specify the search order when loading the DOS mouse driver. 6. Some apps like WinFaxPro and WinCheckIt was sometimes causing a serial mouse to freeze. Changes in 4.22 ------------------ 1. Minor aesthetic changes to support new products in Kensington's input device line. Changes in 5.00 ------------------ 1. Totally revamped the look of the Kensington MouseWorks Control Panel to make some of the advanced features of the software more accessible. 2. Now using a binary format preference file "kensing.prb" to save the Kensington MouseWorks startup options and settings rather than the text format used previously. This improves performance. 3. Fixed all known bugs in the software. 4. Added import and export of MouseWorks application sets. 5. Added cursor visibility support. Changes in 5.02 ------------------ 1. Fixed a problem with the Rest Reminder feature that could cause a general protection fault. 2. Added a fix from Compaq Computer that fixes a problem with certain Compaq portable computers. If needed, this fix is automatically installed in your config.sys file during MouseWorks installation. Changes in 5.03 ------------------ 1. Added scrolling features that allows the mouse to control scrollbars in applications. 2. Added EasyLaunch feature for one button launching of user defined applications. Changes in 5.04 ----------------- New Features: 1. Added ApplicationMenu feature for switching to any of the running applications. KNOWN DRIVER PROBLEMS --------------------- 1. When buttons are redefined to include modifiers as part of their response and they are pressed in conjunction with other buttons the modifiers are not held down correctly. For example when right button is redefined as sending shift+alt+right and the right is pressed and held down and the left is pressed and then released the modifiers associated with the right button press (alt+ctrl) are not held down with the right button. This is pretty obscure, and should not affect most users. KNOWN CONTROL PANEL PROBLEMS ---------------------------- None. UPGRADING FROM VERSIONS PRIOR TO 5.0 ------------------------------------ The format of the preference files has been changed from a text based format to a binary format. It is no longer directly editable via text editors. This change was needed to increase performance and maintain compatibility with other Kensington MouseWorks products. A conversion utility for upgrading your old .INI style preference files to the new binary preference format is included with this installation. CVTPREFS.EXE is a Windows based program that is copied to your MouseWorks installation directory. It will prompt for the old .INI style preference file name that you wish to convert and will output a new binary preference file with the same settings. ADDENDUM TO THE KENSINGTON MOUSEWORKS USER MANUAL: ---------------------------------------------------------- PC TOOLS FOR WINDOWS: If this is installed as your Windows shell, the icon installation does not allow selection of the group they are always placed in the Main group. PORTABLE COMPUTERS: Some portable computers have built in input devices, or emulate a mouse with the keyboard. Kensington input devices will work fine on these machines, but on some machines you may have to tell the software which port contains the hardware so it will ignore the built in devices. For example, if the hardware is plugged into the serial port COM1, and it is not being automatically recognized, you may need to use the setup options in the Kensington MouseWorks Windows setup program (run SETUP -A) to specify COM1. PORTABLE COMPUTER POWER MANAGEMENT: On some portables if you Suspend the machine while in a DOS full screen session, after you Resume and exit to Windows the cursor will not work in Windows. If you then Suspend and Resume in Windows the cursor will work normally again. SETS: If Application Set switching does not appear to be working, be sure that you have specified the correct program filename when creating the Set. For example, WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows uses WPWINFIL.EXE. Lotus Organizer uses ORGANIZE.DLL. If the application is opened when you create a new Set, the Running Applications list in the Select Application window may be used to select the correct filename and path. NORTON DESKTOP FOR WINDOWS: If this is installed as your Windows shell, the icons will be installed if the NDW.INI factory standard values for [QUICK ACCESS] SubClassProgram=1 and [NHOOKSETTINGS] Int21hHook=1 parameters have been selected. HOLDING DOWN CTRL KEY SPECIAL EFFECTS: - In the MouseWorks Buttons tab, holding down CTRL while clicking on the response menus, you will see an extra response at the bottom of the menu. This is the custom action response. Information on this feature can be found in the MouseWorks help system. - When clicking on the options menu while holding down CTRL, an extra item, named compatibility, will show up at the bottom of the menu. - When the control key is held down while viewing the acceleration tab, and the fine acceleration checkbox checked, a table button will appear. The dialog that comes up in response to this button allows for very fine tweaking of the acceleration response curve. The meaning of the values presented is documented in MouseWorks help system. - In the shortcut dialog (displayed when a shortcut response is selected from the response menu) hold down CTRL to change the OK button to a Convert button. This will convert the selected shortcut action into its custom parts and it will be displayed as such from then on (i.e. the cancel shortcut will be displayed as a keystrokes response that sends an escape character. Note that the label for the response maintains the shortcut name). COMPAQ IPD: The internal pointing device on some Compaq portables (LTE Lite) may be used if you add "MouseSearch=nCF8,F" in the EXSTART.INI. WIN 3.0: You must have at least the 3.1 version of Windows in order to use the Kensington MouseWorks software. PS/2 model 57, 65, 90, 95: Or other PS/2 compatible machine that is slow to exit windows, try adding InitPSMouseAtExit=False to the SYSTEM.INI file. HIGH IRQS: If you are getting an "error loading PROGMAN.EXE" when loading Windows when using higher IRQs, try adding to the 386ENH section of SYSTEM.INI file: COM#FIFO=0 and COM#TXFIFO=0 where # is 1 through 4 for a total of 8 lines added. This disables the COM ports 16550 UART.
